It's homecoming weekend here at my school. The homecoming banquet tickets sold out super fast, and we didn't buy any, so instead we had a double date with Adam & Nancy. It was so much fun! We went to Garret's Popcorn, and water tower place, and had dinner at Oven Grinder.
In other news, Sarah is having a giveaway. Check it out.
This is just one of the many reason I love my new dorm - nature right outside my front door. Stefani and I were watching this little guy scampering around and eating acorns. I guess it was a very tiresome job because he had to scurry up into the tree to rest for a while before returning to his hunt. The branch was right at eye level from our second story balcony, so I got some really great pictures.
I was totally stoked for an awesome weekend, but the rain just wouldn't go away!
Last night Haley, Chris, and I went to see Kevin Devine play @ Schubas, with Matt Pryor. Now, seen as this concert was indoors, the rain did not pose much of a problem, just difficult to deal with when were were in transit. Today, we went to the Renegade Craft Fair - an outdoor event. It was horrible. I felt so bad for all of the vendors trying to wrangle their tents and tarps while the rain ruined their merchandise. The weather seemed to affect the turnout as well; I think that there were maybe one fourth of the number from last year. Readymade and Venus Zine both had $5 subscriptions (1-year.) I renewed at Readymade and received a kit to make a fabric luggage tag. Venus Zine gave me a free necklace with my subscription. I also walked away with a $5 print poster, as well as an abundance of business cards, fliers, buttons, & stickers.
Then when I finally arrived home, this is what was waiting for me:
Not fun at all. The water has been shut off all day, and there was a malfunction in the system that caused the fire alarm to go off. I guess that the fire department was already on campus because there was a fire alarm in another building, so they just walked over to ours. To avoid further problems, they shut off the system so if we have a fire, we have to call it in to 911 ourselves. The water has gone down a lot now, but if it rains as much tomorrow, we may have to evacuate.
Now that I have my own kitchen, I have been on the lookout for a good cake tin so that I can make my cinnamon applesauce cake. Since they cost about $13 for a cheaply made new one, I have been looking to the thrift store in hopes of a sturdy and less expensive one. Sadly I have not been fortunate enough to find one, until this week. I found this amazing one at our local thrift store - perfect shape, thick and sturdy metal, and my heart lept! Then I realized there was no price on it and became instantly horrified. See, the policy at this thrift store is that if it has no price it has to be put in a bin for re-pricing, and they refuse to sell it to you. However, I was so determined that I took it up to the counter with the rest of my purchases (which I will tell you more about later) and prepared to plead with them to sell it to me. Sure enough, the cashier kept repeating through her thick Hispanic accent "no price, no for sale." Oh but I fought for it, and she called another person over to the register who asked me "Do you really need this?" to which I replied, "Yes! I have been here several times looking for one of these and you finally have one!"
They sold it to me for $1.21 Success! I guess it pays to be persistent.
So, back to the rest of my purchase. As many of you know I have been trying to get my hands on some more cassette tapes recently for a large order I am currently working on. Well, a couple of weeks ago at that same thrift store I hit the jackpot! Somebody donated DOZENS of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker performed by the London Symphony orchestra, still in the shrink wrap. I bought 15 the first time, and went back for 13 more when I bought the cake tin. I looked like such a goofball buying all those cassettes and begging for a cake tin! The first time was possibly even more silly, because I also bought several toy trucks (to make prints with the tires.)
I can promise you that those cassettes will not go to waste. I am sure you will be seeing them on here again because I have a plan for them. Of course, since I do really love the Nutcracker, at least one of them will certainly be used for my listening enjoyment.
Our dorm building had a door decorating contest, so we decked it out Yo Gabba Gabba style!
I cut out the characters from construction paper, and we had the show playing in our window. We didn't end up winning anything, but Check out our dancey dances.
